Book

March 1, 2010

Leslie,

I can’t find my other flash drive with the original or update images on it, but here is the book. It’s not in order because that got messed up in the original uploading, is there any way I can fix that?

Plan

November 19, 2009

This is my plan for the upcoming weeks.

First on the agenda,

-I need to test paper and printing to see what fits with the images and book the best.

- Continue to work on the text and photoshopping the images.

- Learn sewing of the signatures as well as covers (In class today)

Start cutting out covers and book cloth, make covers and cover with said cloth. ( do this over thanksgiving)

Then after the images and text is complete, I need to print and cut the pages.

Then sew the signatures.

Glue signatures to the covers.

Add the cheetah print.

Revamped

November 19, 2009

I’m thinking for my final book project and edition of 20 I am going to make a snarky book on pick up lines, dating, and tips on dating and “hooking up”. I’m thinking that it will be rather on the small size… possibly pocket sized? So that one can reference it on a date or potential experience with the opposite sex. The book will also contain helpful tools for being on a date with the chosen partner. Such as condoms, excuses to get out of said date, etc.

The background and research will be from my own experiences and opinions.

The text will be brief in most cases, as well as sarcastic and snarky. Dating is a ridiculous concept and scenario in most cases and should be treated as such.

I have yet to decide on imagery at this point. I’m thinking though I may take images from men’s and women’s magazines.  Sort of revamping images from our cultures “dating bibles”.

For the text I am going to use the computer. Image wise i will be taking images from Cosmo magazine and giving them cartoon thought/speech bubbles

Other pages include

“How to spot a sure thing”
“Abortion etiquette”

I’m thinking my book will be about ten pages…. front and back. Thus making it 20 pages

Budget and back up budget

Budget

Size of my book.. 10 pages (or 20 front and back)  5 x 6 or full sheets 6 x 10.

Two sheets of black onyx book cloth – 2 sheets at 12.60

Bargain budget will be 117.

Chicago budget will most likely be – 83

Paper to print – darryl paper

Rives 22 x 30 (about 2.50)   about 62.50 (most of this will be covered by my extra course fees from thesis and adv possibly.)

Updated Budget

November 19, 2009

I spent about $44 dollars in Chicago and got  almost everything I need. All I still have to buy is paper, but I’m now a little unsure.

If I buy paper from D it’ll be about $66 dollars. But now I’m thinking some paper or canson from Digicopy might work well AND I have about 72 dollars from digicopy that is still unused .

So far I have collected all of my images (Thanks, Cosmo.com!) And am working on the writing and how I’m going to format the font. Unsure if I want to format is as a How To book, or how those stupid magazines do it…. Hmmmm

Budget for my book on Dating (pre chicago)

November 16, 2009

I’m thinking for my final book project and edition of 20 I am going to make a snarky book on pick up lines, dating, and tips on dating and “hooking up”. For the text I am going to use the computer. Then I may use collage of images, textures and paper to make it more “romantic”.Then I was thinking I’d scan the images to make reproducing it easier… but because I also intend to add an envelope to add helpful dating “tools” I’m not sure how the digital images will play off of the actual 3d images.

Other pages include

“How to spot a sure thing”
“Abortion etiquette”

I’m thinking my book will be about ten pages…. front and back. Thus making it 20 pages… ish.

As for budget. I’m pretty much going to spend 100 of it on paper.

Most of my budget will go towards the snazzy covers and decorative objects….

Am also going to use book board and book cloth. And sewin’ stuff.

my binding will be using this complicated “signature” process that involves sewing and will most likely end in my stabbing my finger and bleeding all over my books. (Note to self: start thinking of how I can incorporate own blood in book).

Website Review?

October 29, 2009

So because I missed class last week, I’m not entirely sure as to what to do for this website review assignment. Or if we were assigned specific ones. So I’m just going to pick one from the page, and review it?

I chose the website Handbound Weekly (mostly because I liked the title) http://ow.ly/hqAC

This website, as described by the author, contains “new finds taken from the vast sea of wonderful handbound books available on Etsy. I’ll seek out quirky and unusual selections that I hope will charm and cheer you!”

My favorite book posted on the site was one made with legos for the cover. I thought it was really clever how the artist used the flat lego sheets in order to create a cover for a book (or possible notebook) and my inner 7 year old cheered with glee. I just wish the artist would have utilized the legos more possibly and build up the covers some more. I mean? If you are going to use legos. then USE THE LEGOS.

The website was essentially a blog and therefore was easy to navigate. Part of me however, wishes that the author had some more updated posts, but given how often I forget about my blog I can’t really blame her. (Hi, pot. I’m kettle).

Ugh.

October 29, 2009

I always forget that I have a blog until Leslie emails us telling it to write in it! haha.
Well my altered book was kind of a disaster. The book I chose was a lot thicker than my mock up, so I encountered numerous problems that I did not have when doing my mockup while trying to fill its numerous pages. The one main problem being some craft issues, as well as what to do with the bunch of pages left over.
My original intention as to rebind the book. however. after ruining two “practice books” I then planned on discussing it in crit to figure otu what to do.
THEN I got sick, then missed Leslie’s email. So I tried to do it myself. The results were less than successful.

Flu.

October 15, 2009

This whole having the flu thing has really thrown me completely off and I am a little behind. Wait, scratch that, completely behind. And so I am scrambling to catch up as most of my fall break I was still dying with the plague.

However, I do have some ideas now that I can finally breathe again (and think.)

I’m thinking that I want to have my altered book based on The Inferno and the layers of hell. Dante’s Inferno has always been one of my favorite books of all time, and while browsing through it again, I fell in love with the vivid imagery once more and feel it would fit perfectly for an altered book.

For the accordion fold and language I think it would be perfect for my map of hell and that I would possible illustrate the book with photocopy transfers? And use the letterpress for most of the text.

HOWEVER, the problem with that is that my current book that I chose, it really doesn’t fit with this concept at all. Except for the fact that it’s a good size and also red. I’m thinking maybe I can just start from scratch with it? But it was my original intention to use pieces from the original book, so a trip to Downtown books is in order.

As for my other book, I’m thinking I might want to used found images again, except this time use pictures from magazines and use pictures of textures and patterns and cut them up to create my imagery instead of just using the straight up imagery. And then depending on my photoshopping skills maybe edit it some more digitally? I’m wanting to play with the idea of transitioning and changing imagery and text that are already around into something new and different.

Middle School

I was getting to where I could see the truth. Someday I’ll be brave enough to speak it.
the outsiders

“They were the only kind of girls that would look at us, I thought. Tough, loud girls who wore too much eye makeup and giggled and swore too much.”
the outsiders

“I had taken the long way around, but I was finally home. To stay.”

“After Twelve, age isn’t important. Most of us even lose track of how old we are as time passes, though information is in the Hall of Open Records… What’s important is the preparation for adult life, and the training you’ll receive in your Assignment.”
the giver

“How could someone not fit in? The community was so meticulously ordered, the choices so carefully made.” the giver

“There was just a moment when things weren’t quite the same, weren’t quite as they had always been through the long friendship.” the giver

“His childhood, his friendships, his carefree sense of security-all of these things [seem] to be slipping away. With his new, heightened feelings, he was overwhelmed by sadness at the way the others had laughed and shouted, playing at war. But he knew that they could not understand why, without the memories. He felt such love for Asher and for Fiona. But they could not feel it back, without the memories. And he could not give them those.”
the giver

“All the things I do with my friends,” Jonas points out, and his mothernodded in agreement.
“I always participated, of course, because as children we must experience all of those things. And I studied
hard in school, as you do, Jonas. But again and again, during free time, I found myself drawn to the newchildren.
I spend almost all of my volunteer hours helping in the Nurturing Center. Of course the Elders knew that, from their
observation.” The giver

Jonas,” she said, speaking not only to him to the whole community of which he was a part, “you will be trained to be our new Reciever of Memory. We thank you for your childhood.” The she turned left the stage, left him there alone, standing and facing the crowd, whichbegan spontaniously the colectivbe murmur of his name. “Jonas.” It was a whisper at first, hushed, barely audiable. “Jonas. Jonas” then louder, faster. “JONAS. JONAS. JONAS.” The giver

After Twelve, age isn’t important. Most of us even lose track of how old we are as time passes. – the giver

The next morning, for the first time, Jonas did not take his pill. Something within him, something that had grown there through the memories, told him to throw the pill away.

the giver

“It’s strange indeed how memories can lie dormant in a man’s mind for so many years. Yet those memories can be awakened and brought forth fresh and new, just by something you’ve seen, or something you’ve heard, or the sight of an old familiar face.”

Although they couldn’t talk in my terms, they had a language of their own that was easy to understand. Sometimes I would see the answer in their eyes, and again it would be in the friendly wagging of their tails. Other times I could hear the answer in a low whine or feel it in the soft caress of a warm flicking tongue. In some way, they would always answer.”
Where the Red Fern Grows

“I always took their kidding with a smile on my face, but it made my blood boil like the water in Mama’s teakettle.”
Where the Red Fern Grows

“Men,” said Mr. Kyle, “people have been trying to understand dogs ever since the beginning of time. One never knows what they’ll do. You can read every day where a dog saved the life of a drowning child, or lay down his life for his master. Some people call this loyalty. I don’t. I may be wrong, but I call it love–the deepest kind of love.”
Where the Red Fern Grows

Hey! Whoa. You just chose your destiny. You can’t change that.
